Heroic Send-Off At Luttrellstown Castle Resort

Star’s Epic Atlantic Challenge

Under 70 days before Damian Browne embarks on solo Atlantic crossing

Dublin, 4th October 2017 – Rugby legend Damian Browne is about to undertake his greatest challenge yet – a 4800-km solo Atlantic crossing from the Canary Islands to Antigua.

Galway-born Browne, whose Irish and European rugby career spanned 16 years, is one of only three Irish men to ever attempt the world’s toughest rowing race.

Lined out at Luttrellstown Castle Resort to support the former Leinster and Connacht player, were All-Ireland winning Dublin footballers, Paul Mannion, Paddy Andrews and James McCarthy, along with Irish rugby heroes, Sophie Spence, Mike Ross, Jamie Heaslip and Mike McCarthy.

The record is 35 days and while all boats are fully equipped at the start, they are not allowed to accept any repair, assistance, food or water during the crossing.
Browne is using the expedition to raise €50,000 for three charities close to his heart – MADRA Dog Rescue and Adoption, Médecins Sans Frontieres and the Strong Roots Foundation School, Rwanda.

With under 70 days left before the start of this epic Atlantic voyage, Luttrellstown Castle Resort, a proud sponsor of Damian Browne’s Atlantic Challenge 2017, hosted a reception for Browne and Darien – his specially-designed 1.8m-wide MK5 Ocean Rowing Boat.

Ivan King, General Manager, Luttrellstown Castle Resort, said:  “Luttrellstown Castle Resort is very proud to support Damian Browne, a brave and exceptional sportsman, as he embarks on this great Atlantic voyage for such worthy causes.”
