You’ve seen them on television, you may even have seen them in the wild but one thing is for sure, you’ve never seen falcons, owls and hawks like this – up close and personal. One of the most popular outdoor activities here at Luttrellstown Castle Resort, is an afternoon with our falconer and his magnificent birds of prey. What is sure to become one of the greatest memories of your visit to Luttrellstown, you, your family and your friends can enjoy a unique display with some incredible creatures.

Falconry is an art that originated in the east around 400AD and has since travelled westward across Europe. The falcon, a powerful, beautiful and charismatic predator, is the fastest animal in the world. Whether loved, feared, worshipped as a god, valued as a hunting partner or used as a corporate or heraldic symbol, falcons have fascinated humans for millennia. Now, you have a chance to see exactly why that is, with a variety of falconry experiences to choose from:

  1. Hawk Walks
  • Start off in our purpose-built falconry centre, with a tea/coffee reception and safety talk
  • Get a brief history of our birds during an educational walk around the centre
  • Select one of four Harris Hawks before taking a walk around the estate
  • Under instruction from the Falconer, you’ll fly your hawk from tree-to-tree
  • You’ll then fly your hawk tree-to-fist as they land on your outstretched gloved hand
  • You’ll feed and carry your hawk back to the lodge
  • There, you’ll receive a digital photo of you holding your hawk (included in price)
  1. Falconry Experience ‘A’
  • Everything from the hawk walk
  • Plus a thrilling lure demonstration with one of our four falcons. 
  1. Falconry Experience ‘B’
  • Everything from the hawk walk and Falconry Experience ‘A’
  • Plus a flying demonstration from a local Barn Owl and his Scandinavian cousin.
  1. Falconry Experience ‘C’
  • Everything from the Hawk Walk, Falconry Experiences ‘A’ and ‘B’
  • Plus, four larger owls including Eagle Owls, Bengal Owls and Barn Owls
  • Fly, hold and feed these fabulous birds as you get up close to these amazing creatures
  1. Owl Experience
  • Watch in wonder as six owls put on a display for you
  • Meet little Bella, our native long-eared owl
  • Move up in size to Lincoln our Bengal Owl and our two new arrivals
  • Finish in style by flying our massive Eagle Owl, Teddy
